The NSCA identifies three important factors present in poor psychological efficiency in performance:
1. High degree of ego involvement, in which athletes perceives threat of self-esteem
2. Perceived discrepancy of ability vs demands for success
3. Fear of consequences of failure, loss of approval
Notice these are perceptions and not absolute things. As coaches and physical therapists, it is essential we teach an athlete to disassociate their performance from their self-worth. This is neither good for their health nor their performance.
